SHAH ALAM, May 15 — Parti Keadilan Rakyat is looking to secure at least 50 parliamentary seats in the upcoming 16th general election to strengthen the party and advance its reform agenda, said Selangor party chief Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the target is a key commitment of the new leadership contesting in the party’s upcoming election.

He also said that Malaysia, set to celebrate its centenary in 38 years, must be guided by the reformist ideals laid down by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“This journey must be steered by leaders backed by the Prime Minister, such as Nurul Izzah (Anwar), Sim Tze Tzin, and fellow vice-presidents and central leadership council members, to advance the reformist vision for the nation as it approaches its 100th year.

“The Damai team pledges to secure 50 parliamentary seats in the upcoming general election to ensure victory and maintain Anwar as Keadilan president and the Prime Minister,” he said, referring to the group led by Nurul Izzah, short for “Dari Akar, Membina Aspirasi Inklusif (From the Root, Building Inclusive Aspirations)”.

Amirudin was speaking at a grassroots engagement event last night at Dewan Raja Muda Musa here, alongside Keadilan deputy president candidate Nurul Izzah, who will be challenging incumbent Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said the party election is more than a contest for positions, and called it a critical platform to address pressing national issues such as the economy, education, unity, and climate change.

“We must not fall into the trap of personal rivalry as this election serves as a foundation to strengthen the party and offer the people a clear agenda,” he said.

Amirudin, who is also Keadilan vice-president, said Nurul Izzah’s nomination was a consensus by 19 party branches in Selangor.

“The nomination was not a unilateral decision. Every branch chief in Selangor was contacted — I was in Osaka at the time — and the majority expressed readiness to support Nurul Izzah for the deputy presidency,” he told reporters.

Keadilan holds 31 parliamentary seats and is part of the unity government alongside DAP, Amanah, and Barisan Nasional.
