6.0-magnitude quake hits Northern Sumatra, Indonesia — GFZ

HONG KONG, May 11 — An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 jolted Northern Sumatra, Indonesia at 0857 GMT on Sunday, the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences said, Xinhua reported.

The epicentre, with a depth of 89.4 km, was initially determined to be at 3.73 degrees north latitude and 97.03 degrees east longitude.

The agency did not issue a tsunami warning, as the tremor was not expected to generate significant waves.

The tremor was strongly felt by residents, but no preliminary reports of serious damage have been received so far, Sofyan, a senior official from Aceh province’s Disaster Management Agency, told Xinhua.

Indonesia, an archipelago, frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location within the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire. The country also has 127 active volcanoes and high tectonic activity.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) in a statement said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 74 kilometres and its epicentre was 107 km southeast of Meulaboh, Indonesia.

Tremors were also felt in many areas along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

However, there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia.
