Selangor mulls mandatory defibrillators in public spaces

SHAH ALAM, April 27 — The Selangor government is studying guidelines and is in talks to make Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) mandatory in public areas.

State executive councillor for public health and environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the matter needs fine-tuning to ensure clear education can be delivered to the Selangor people.

“I believe there are those among us who don’t know what an AED is and, more worryingly, don’t know how to conduct cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

“CPR is an emergency treatment to save lives while AEDs indirectly boost the survival rate after CPR,” she said in a statement today, adding that the state government has prepared 56 AEDs for placement at state government buildings, local authorities and subsidiaries since February.

“The heart can stop beating at any time, to anyone, regardless of background, age or health.

“In many cases, the chance of survival does not depend on doctors or nurses, but us as members of the public,” she added.
