State to activate 11 flood mitigation moves in critical areas

SHAH ALAM, April 24 — The Selangor government will implement 11 immediate mitigation measures in the flood-prone areas of Taman Sri Muda, Meru and Taman Seri Alam.

State executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim said the decision was made at a special coordination meeting on Tuesday between local government officials and agencies including the Selangor Public Works Department and Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS).

The JPS presented short-, medium- and long-term plans to tackle floods in the three areas.

“In Meru, unowned drains will be maintained and sluice gates installed at Sungai Binjai as part of the Sungai Kapar Kecil and Sungai Kapar Besar flood mitigation plans. Booster pumps at Sungai Binjai will be activated as well,” he said in a statement today.

In Taman Seri Muda, the immediate flood prevention moves are to upgrade the ageing drainage system.

“The damaged sluice gate to Sungai Klang will be replaced, and the Taman Sri Muda catchment pond will be enlarged, by strengthening and upgrading soil bunds at Sungai Klang’s banks and building soil bunds along Sungai Rasau’s banks.

“Other move include enforcement on trespassers at river land reserves, the shifting of utility cables and pipes that obstruct drains, and the upgrade of the No.3 automated water control gate,” Izham said, adding that the Selangor JPS had presented progress reports on repairs done for the catchment pond in Hillpark, Puncak Alam, which broke for the second time, flooding Taman Seri Alam early yesterday morning.

Izham said Hillpark Resources had suggested several immediate measures to tackle the problem that will be implemented this week during talks with the JPS and residents’ group, adding that he would visit the area soon.
