SHAH ALAM, April 24 — The number of students in Selangor who achieved straight As in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination rose by 363 compared to the previous year — an 18.1 per cent increase.

State Education Department director Jafri Abu said that 2,368 students, or 3.65 per cent of candidates, who took their examinations last year, scored all As, up from 2,005 students (3.15 per cent) in 2023.

This marks a 0.5 percentage point improvement in the rate of top scorers.

The number of candidates with at least a Grade C in all subjects also increased by 1.53 per cent, from 8,362 in 2023 (13.12 per cent of candidates) to 8,490 (13.08 per cent).

"Meanwhile, a total of 22,501 candidates (34.67 per cent) obtained at least a pass or grade E in all subjects compared to 21,071 (33.06 per cent) previously," he said during a press conference to announce the SPM 2024 results for Selangor at the department today.

Also present was Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari.

Jafri added that the National Average Grade (GPN) for Selangor stood at 4.59 points, an improvement of 0.08 points from the 4.67 recorded in 2023.

Under the national grading system, a lower GPN indicates better overall academic performance.

Based on the Subject Average Grade (GPMP), 29 out of 57 subjects showed improved performance, while 26 subjects recorded a decline compared to the 2023 examination.

“The performance of six core subjects improved, while Moral Education showed no change in its GPMP score.

“English recorded the highest improvement, with the GPMP rising by 0.23 points — from 4.53 in 2023 to 4.30 in 2024,” he said.

Four subjects under the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) elective category — including pure science and additional mathematics — also showed improved performance.

Jafri also expressed his appreciation to Amirudin, who also serves as the state executive councillor for education, for his continued support in enhancing educational achievements in the state.

“The Selangor State Education Department values the collaboration with Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), or MBI, as well as the dedication of teachers and parents in supporting initiatives such as the Selangor People’s Tutoring Programme (PTRS),” he said.
