SHAH ALAM, April 15 — A drain-widening project in Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru, Puchong, with an allocation of RM15 million, to lower the flood risk in the area.

Seri Serdang assemblyman Abbas Azmi said the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) project, set to start this year, can increase the capacity of drains and lower the risk of recurring flash floods.

“Floods have many causes, not limited to infrastructure, like climate change, tides, and such.

“What we can do is to lower the flood risk through efforts including … not littering in drains and causing them to clog, which is one of the causes of flash floods,” he told Media Selangor.

On Friday, flash floods hit Puchong, Shah Alam, Klang, and Hulu Langat after a period of continuous heavy rain.

State executive councillor for disaster management Mohd Najwan Halimi said the incident was due to heavy rain in combination with the high-tide phenomenon, and advised victims to evacuate to relief centres if ordered to do so.

Two people were found dead in the floods, believed to be due to electric shock.
