SHAH ALAM, April 13 — A flood-control pump system, which malfunctioned due to insufficient power supply, was identified as the reason several areas here flooded on Friday.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said he will contact Tenaga Nasional Bhd to facilitate immediate electricity supply to the pump and restore its operation.

“Floods in nearly all areas have receded, but there was also a link to the high-tide phenomenon. I must review it. Several (pumphouse) projects have been completed but could not operate due to (insufficient) energy supply.

“I will contact TNB immediately to ensure we have enough power so pumps are operational at critical times,” he said during the Sabak Bernam Community Care Connection event in Bagan Nakhoda Omar, Sungai Air Tawar, today.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said several local infrastructure projects, including those for flood mitigation, will be continued.

“Project coordination must be expedited to ensure the preparedness of a more sound system in the future.

“Implementation requires close cooperation and quick action of agencies involved. We don’t want to keep facing losses and negative effects due to delays,” he added.

Continuous heavy rain early on Friday forced over 1,000 Petaling and Klang residents from their flooded homes, with more than 200 families having been reportedly evacuated to six temporary relief centres.

Among the affected localities are Taman Sri Muda, Padang Jawa, and Meru.
