SUBANG JAYA, April 8 — The Selangor Education Department (JPNS) is committed to providing emotional support to the children of Putra Heights after the gas pipeline explosion incident there on April 1.

A host of activities have been planned and carried out at the two temporary shelters (PPS) there to keep the children occupied and to help them manage their emotions.

Fadzilah Mohamed Yazid, a JPNS Smart Support Team officer, said his team was already on the ground at PPS Dewan Camelia since day two of the incident to provide the primary and secondary school students there with care and support.

“One of the activities we set up was for the students to draw a map of Malaysia as a symbol of unity and hope. We have also provided them with Lego blocks for play, and other interactive toys,” he said while met at PPS Dewan Camelia last night.

According to Fadzilah, there were eight JPNS volunteers stationed at the two PPS last week, while three volunteers take turns this week to continue with the activities there, especially after school hours.

All the students who take part in the activities will have their attendance taken daily, but their participation is based on their health status for that day.

The initiative aims to regulate the emotions of the children and help them deal with the tragedy.

On April 1, a gas pipeline belonging to Petronas at Jalan Putra Harmoni, Putra Heights, exploded, with a fireball reaching 30 meters into the air. It took almost eight hours to manage the blaze.
