Canada-US relations will never be same amid Trump's tariff policy — Foreign minister

MOSCOW, April 4 — Relations between the United States (US) and Canada will "never be the same again" in the wake of Washington's new tariff policy aimed at resetting global trade, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said on Friday, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

"We take stock of what the US has done, and at the same time, we know that the relationship will never be the same again, and that is my message to Europeans.

"The relationship with the US will never be the same, they want to do things differently and we understand that," she said upon arrival at a meeting of Nato foreign ministers in Brussels.

Joly added that US President Donald Trump seeks to "do a global reset on trade", which Canada has been dealing with for over three months.

"We are the biggest client of the US by far; we buy more from the US than the United Kingdom, France, China, and Japan combined.

"So for anybody that has been in business before, when you treat your client, your best client, the way we have been treated, it means that you want fundamentally to change the way you are operating," she said.

On Wednesday, Trump signed an executive order imposing a 10 per cent base tariff on all imports to the US starting April 5, while higher, reciprocal tariffs on countries with which the US has the largest trade deficits will take effect on April 9.

In early March, Washington introduced 25 per cent tariffs on goods imported from Mexico and Canada.
