JPJ nabs foreign man suspected of smuggling untaxed liquor

KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 — The Federal Territory Road Transport Department (JPJ) detained a foreign man suspected of smuggling untaxed liquor at the Sentul Toll Plaza on the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway yesterday.

Kuala Lumpur JPJ director Hamidi Adam said the Indian national was apprehended during a special operation under Ops Hari Raya 2025, which began at 3pm.

“An inspection of the cargo lorry he was driving led to the discovery of 2,612 cans of liquor, believed to have evaded an estimated RM71,351.28 in taxes.

“Checks also found that the suspect did not have a valid driving license or vocational license, and had committed several technical offences, including an expired Puspakom inspection certificate and road tax,” he said in a statement today.

The lorry was also found to be overloaded by 33.6 per cent.

Hamidi added that further checks revealed the suspect’s passport had expired, and his Social Visit Pass was invalid.

The case was handed over to the Customs Department for further action.
