KLANG, March 29 — The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (MAFS) is looking for ways to help restore pig farming that has been impacted by the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak, particularly in Selangor.
Its minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said pig farming in the Sepang and Kuala Langat districts are currently facing a big problem following the culling of thousands of pigs that were infected with ASF.
As such, he expects the price of pork to increase due to the need to rely on imported meat.
"Efforts are being carried out so that farmers can continue to raise new livestock (pigs),” Mohamad said during the launch of the National-Level "Semarak Syawal 1446 Hijrah” programme at the Taman Sri Andalas Farmers’ Market today.
The Selangor Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) had previously said that it had culled 14,000 pigs suspected of being infected with ASF so far.
Its director Dr Hassuzana Khalil said the culling was carried out using carbon dioxide gas, and the carcasses were buried on pig farms in accordance with established guidelines.
So far, 58 farms in Sepang and Kuala Langat have been affected by ASF and were issued disposal orders under Section 19 of the Animals Act 1953 to control the spread of the disease.
