KUALA LUMPUR, March 28 — The National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) has detected an online scam impersonating its officers, targeting the families of clients undergoing treatment and rehabilitation programmes.
It said the scammers allegedly tried to extort the clients’ families by threatening strict action if they did not pay a certain amount of money.
“So far, AADK has detected two cases involving phone calls and emails sent directly to the clients’ families. However, no victims have been reported as the families promptly contacted the AADK Operations Centre Hotline (PGH) for verification.
“AADK advises family members or guardians who receive suspicious calls or emails to immediately contact AADK rehabilitation officers at district, state, or headquarters levels before taking any action,” AADK said in a statement today.
The agency also urged clients’ families not to transfer money to any suspicious individuals or accounts and to lodge a police report immediately.
“AADK is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of clients and their families or guardians from falling victim to online scams,” it added.
The public is reminded to remain vigilant and not fall for fraudulent tactics misusing AADK’s name for personal gain.
Victims of such scams are encouraged to file a police report immediately and report the incident to AADK via its nearest office or through the PGH AADK toll-free hotline at 1-800-22-2235 or WhatsApp at 019-626 2233.
