Thailand repatriates nearly 5,000 people over alleged job scams in Myanmar

BANGKOK, March 21 — Approximately 4,895 individuals rescued from alleged job scam syndicates in Myanmar have been repatriated to their home countries, according to Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Its Department of Information and Spokesperson's Director-General Nikorndej Balankura said that according to the information received on March 11 from Myanmar, the Thai authorities were provided with a list of 7,372 foreign nationals rescued in Myanmar.

"Of the total number of people rescued, the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs has facilitated the repatriation of 4,895 individuals to their respective home countries.

"The majority were Chinese nationals, accounting for 3,634, followed by 653 Indonesians, 549 Indians, and others of various nationalities," he told a press briefing today.

Nikorndej added that approximately 2,400 individuals, or potentially more, may still remain in Myanmar.

"The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to coordinate closely with foreign embassies to ensure their prompt repatriation," he said.

On March 6, the Thai Foreign Ministry announced that the government aimed to repatriate 1,500 people, or 300 individuals, each weekday, with regular repatriations of Chinese nationals scheduled every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
