BEIJING, March 3 — China is considering imposing additional tariffs on the United States (US) agricultural and food products in retaliation to Washington's planned tariff hikes on Chinese goods, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti, citing China's Global Times newspaper today.
On Thursday (February 27), US President Donald Trump said they will implement its proposed tariffs on Canada and Mexico on March 4 as planned, as well as an additional 10 per cent tariff on China on the same day.
Beijing is actively evaluating countermeasures to address Washington's tariff threats, the source said, adding that the measures would likely include tariffs as well as other measures, with US agricultural and food products expected to be on the list.
On Friday (February 28), the Chinese Commerce Ministry vowed that the country would take all necessary steps to protect its legitimate rights and interests in light of Washington's planned tariff hikes.
It urged the US to "not repeat its own mistakes" and to return to the path of resolving disputes through fair dialogue as soon as possible.
On February 10, China imposed additional tariffs, including a 15 per cent duty on US coal and liquefied natural gas and a 10 per cent tariff on several other products.
