SHAH ALAM, Feb 21 — Eighty river pollution cases were logged last year, said state executive councillor for public health and environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin.

She said the cases were investigated by the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) to identify causes and perpetrators.

“For cases with completed investigation papers, compounds for offences under the Luas Enactment 1999 were issued against perpetrators upon approval from the prosecution,” she said during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.

She was answering a question by Taman Medan assemblyman Dr Afif Bahardin on the number of river pollution cases last year, and enforcement action taken on responsible parties.

Jamaliah added that various enforcement actions were implemented to handle pollution issues, including 24-hour monitoring by the Luas Elite Water Squad, established in 2020.

“The river monitoring is to identify activities within 50m of at-risk river reserves and run studies on land use inventory.

“Also implemented was the setup of a water quality telemetry station … as a public warning system and phasic monitoring of areas declared as at-risk protected zones under the Section 48 of the Luas Enactment 1999,” she said.
