SHAH ALAM, Jan 23 — Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj today expressed pride over the Selangor Zakat Board’s (LZS) performance, which has enhanced service quality in tithe collection and distribution.

His Royal Highness said that since its establishment in 1994, LZS has undergone innovation and modernisation to the extent of becoming a model for other countries including Indonesia and Thailand.

However, the ruler reminded the agency not to be complacent with its achievements, and instead continue enhancing its efficiency, credibility and shariah compliance.

“The LZS must always look into the best way to help asnaf and how it can help them live independently and constructively, guided by syarak.

“This includes visiting (recipients) to update data and obtain the latest information on recipients based on their household income and financial capabilities,” the ruler said when officiating LZS’ headquarters, Menara Zakat Sultan Idris Shah, here today.

Sultan Sharafuddin also suggested LZS enlist the help of village heads and district religious leaders to identify asnaf.

His Royal Highness reminded LZS to take into account urban dwellers, especially the urban poor, and ensure their eligibility to receive aid under the eight preset asnaf categories.

“Zakat is a religious observance to elevate Muslims’ dignity. History has proven that zakat is not just an individual observance, but a social system that ensures human rights, protects their dignity and enforces shariah goals to preserve religion and property,” the ruler said.

Sultan Sharafuddin said strict action has been taken against zakat embezzlers, who have been brought to court.

“The responsibilities of LZS are immense in upholding Muslims’ duties in the state. I remind all levels of zakat collection … to always be honest, accountable, have integrity, and ensure there is no abuse of power,” said His Royal Highness.
