MB: State plans mosque cooperatives in 2025 to support communities, generate income

SHAH ALAM, Dec 17 — The Selangor government plans to establish mosque-based cooperatives next year to benefit congregation members and generate sustainable income for these institutions, said Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

The Menteri Besar said the initiative aims to catalyse economic activities within mosque communities, with its implementation model currently under review.

"At present, there is already one mosque cooperative at Masjid Al-Falah in Subang Jaya.

“Beyond fostering stronger ties between worshippers and the mosque, it provides opportunities for economic contributions," he told reporters after officiating the Selangor Cooperative Movement Appreciation Ceremony 2024 at the Shah Alam Convention Centre, here last night.

Amirudin also stated that the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) is in discussions to ensure the initiative’s success while safeguarding the sanctity and reputation of mosques.

“Thorough discussions are being held to prevent conflicts such as disputes over space, location, or management positions that could affect the mosque’s image and the Muslim community,” he said.

Earlier, Amirudin revealed that Selangor remains the leader in Malaysia’s cooperative sector, with 2,115 cooperatives registered across the state as of last year.

These cooperatives recorded RM706.31 million in revenue, holding total assets valued at RM2.69 billion and a membership of 648,633 during the same period.

“This achievement highlights Selangor’s capacity to leverage cooperatives as an economic driver while empowering communities,” he added.
