Socso disburses RM2.12 bln in disability compensation in 2023

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 10 — A total of 219,640 insured individuals received disability compensation in 2023, with the Social Security Organisation (Socso) disbursing RM2.12 billion in total, said Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong.

He said that based on Socso’s statistics, the compensation covered various categories, including temporary disability, permanent disability, pensions, invalidity assistance, and sick leave allowances.

“Of this total, 215,113 insured individuals received compensation through the Employment Injury Scheme and Disability Scheme, under the Employees’ Social Security Act, amounting to RM2.10 billion.

“Additionally, 4,476 individuals received benefits under the Self-Employment Social Security Act (Act 789), totalling RM26.54 million, while 51 individuals received RM75,947 in compensation under the Housewives’ Social Security Act 2022 (Act 838),” he said during an oral question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Sim was responding to a question from Datuk Adnan Abu Hassan (BN-Kuala Pilah), regarding the statistics on disability compensation paid by Socso in 2023, and the ministry’s efforts to combat fraudulent claims.

To address the issue of false claims, Sim explained that the ministry and Socso are collaborating with various ministries and enforcement agencies, including the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the Health Ministry.

He added that his ministry is also conducting data analysis, monitoring, supervision, and surveillance, along with ongoing internal investigations, particularly to uncover any networks involved in fraudulent permanent disability benefits claims, which have been operating over the past several years.
