GOMBAK, Dec 8 — The state government is expected to finalise the ratification of the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672) by the year-end.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the Act could reduce the cost of solid waste management currently handled through KDEB Waste Management.

Selangor’s operating costs for collecting one metric tonne of waste are estimated at RM7 to RM8, significantly lower than the market rate of RM14.

“One of the advantages of the Act 672 agreement is that the Federal government will provide funds to cover the shortfall.

“Currently, solid waste collection operates on a very limited budget, leading to increased dumping, particularly during festive seasons, and encouraging some parties to resort to illegal waste disposal sites.

“By signing the Act 672 agreement, we will be able to cover the costs involved,” he said, adding that the agreement is now in its final stages.

Amirudin was speaking to the press after officiating the 2024 Environmental Carnival organised by the Selayang Municipal Council at the Batu Caves Public Park yesterday.

Previously, the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj expressed disappointment over Klang Royal City’s cleanliness standards, describing the area as still dirty and poorly maintained.

His Royal Highness said that despite the region’s rapid development, many areas, including rivers, remain heavily polluted with garbage.

The Ruler also urged a comprehensive plan be developed promptly and a special team be established to resolve the issue.
