State education department prepares hostels for flood-affected SPM candidates

SHAH ALAM, Dec 2 — The Selangor State Education Department has identified suitable hostels to accommodate Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates who may be displaced by potential floods during their examinations.

State Education director Jafri Abu said the hostel selection is strategically based on flood predictions from the relevant agencies.

"Today marks the start of the oral examination. So far, no SPM candidates have been affected, and those previously staying at the temporary relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Binjai, Meru, have returned home.

"All actions will adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOP) of the ministry. Yesterday, we had discussions with the top management on this matter," he said when contacted.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek yesterday announced a directive for relocating all flood-affected SPM candidates to designated hostels.

She said the ministry is actively engaging with parents to obtain consent for placing their children in these hostels, ensuring smoother arrangements throughout the examination period.

A total of 402,956 candidates have registered for the 2024 SPM exams, with the Bahasa Melayu oral test beginning today and continuing until Thursday.

The written examinations are scheduled from January 2 to February 6 next year.
