SHAH ALAM, Nov 21 — Selangor recorded a trade value of RM639.2 billion from January to September this year, the State Legislative Assembly was told today.

State executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han said this accounted for 29.9 per cent of Malaysia’s total trade, and is a 13.9 per cent increase from the same period last year.

Ng said RM264 billion of the overall figure was for exports.

“It represented 23.7 per cent of the total national export value.

“Additionally, the state recorded RM375.2 billion in imports, contributing 36.6 per cent to the nation’s total imports,” he said in reply to a question from opposition leader and Hulu Kelang assemblyman Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

Ng said Selangor’s major trade products include machinery and equipment, valued at RM273.35 billion (42.8 per cent), manufactured goods at RM101.99 billion (16 per cent), chemicals at RM78.65 billion (12.3 per cent), various manufactured articles at RM65.35 billion (10.2 per cent), and food products at RM46.37 billion (7.3 per cent).

Selangor’s main trading partners are China (23.9 per cent), the United States (12.1 per cent), Japan (6.5 per cent), Indonesia (4.4 per cent), and India (4.1 per cent).

“Selangor’s trade performance has shown significant growth, positively impacting national export figures following Malaysia’s participation in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership in 2022.

“The average trade value over the three years prior to these agreements stood at RM615.44 billion, while the post-2022 average rose to RM738.47 billion, highlighting the agreements’ positive impact,” he said.
