KUALA TERENGGANU, Nov 14 — A total of 883 primary and secondary schools nationwide are at risk of being flooded.
Education Ministry director-general Azman Adnan said Sarawak accounts for 227 of those schools, followed by Sabah (208), Pahang (93), Kelantan (91), Terengganu (90), Perak (45), Selangor (42), Kedah (23), Kuala Lumpur (19), Johor (19), Penang (15), Negeri Sembilan (10), and Melaka (1).
He said the ministry has made initial preparations to face the northeast monsoon, which will last until March next year.
“The Education Ministry (MOE) launched its preparations for the northeast monsoon SMK Padang Garuda, Kuantan, Pahang, on October 28.
“We are fully prepared to activate existing committees at the state, district and national levels. In Terengganu, 80 schools are ready to be used as temporary relief centres in the event of flooding,” he said after officiating the 2024 Sekalung Budi Sejunjung Kasih Kenangan Abadi ceremony for the Terengganu Education Department here today.
Azman said the department has stepped up cooperation with other agencies and MOE staff have volunteered for flood relief aid.
“MOE also provides counselling services through the Smart Support Team and Academic Support Team. Volunteer kits are also provided for post-flood clean-up,” he said.
