UPNM bullying: Police record statements from nine people, including suspect

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 11 — Police have taken the statements of nine people in the investigation into the case of a Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) student, believed to have been stomped on by a senior, to the extent of suffering rib and spinal fractures.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said those whose statements were taken involved witnesses to the incident and university staff.

“The suspect in the incident has also been identified and is scheduled to appear at the Cheras police headquarters this afternoon to be interviewed,” he said in a statement today.

Yesterday, Rusdi in a statement announced that the 19-year-old victim, who is also a first-year student, suffered a fractured rib and spine after being injured by a third-year student and is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

Yesterday, Rusdi in a statement said the victim, a 19-year-old first-year UPNM student, suffered fractures to his rib and spine and is being treated in hospital. He was claimed to have been hurt by a third-year UPNM student at 10.45pm on October 21.

Police received a report on the incident at 8.40pm on November 8.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin in a post on X yesterday said his ministry condemns the incident as inappropriate and damaging to the image of UPNM and higher learning institutions.

Khaled said his ministry is letting police investigate the incident.

Earlier, the case went viral on X when a woman asked if it was proper of a UPNM student to bully others, claiming her younger brother was stomped on until his rib was fractured.

Meanwhile, Rusdi said the suspect presented himself at the Cheras police headquarters this afternoon to have his statement recorded.

“The suspect was not arrested. Five other witnesses also had their statements recorded as of this afternoon,” he added.
