SHAH ALAM, Oct 17 — Approximately 396 hotspots across Selangor have been identified as potentially facing floods following the king tide phenomenon which begins today.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director of operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar said they are focusing on four main river basins with a high population density.
“We have identified 396 focus areas across Selangor that are at risk of flooding due to this king tide phenomenon, especially if heavy rains persist.
“However, the Fire Department is focusing on the Sungai Klang basin, the Sungai Langat basin, the Sungai Rasau basin, and the Sungai Bernam basin, to prevent the situation from worsening,” he told SelangorKini.
Mukhlis added that JBPM has already carried out thorough inspections of all machinery and equipment, including preparing 79 boats throughout the state.
He also advised the public to avoid recreational activities near the coast and in hilly areas in the near future, to prevent unwanted incidents.
“Looking at the weather forecast, rain is expected tomorrow, but we do not know its intensity. Regardless, we are prepared to step in and assist in the event of of disasters or emergencies,” Mukhlis said.
Previously, the state government urged all residents in Selangor's coastal areas of to be alert and cautious following the king tide phenomenon, which begins today until Sunday (October 20).
State executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Izham Hashim said the sea levels are expected to rise, reaching a height of up to 5.8 metres at 6.17am tomorrow, considered the highest for this year.
