Wisma Putra issues alert for Malaysians in Florida as Hurricane Milton approaches

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 — The Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) has advised Malaysians in Florida, the United States (US), to remain vigilant as Hurricane Milton, now a Category Five storm, approaches the Gulf Coast.

Citing the US National Hurricane Centre (NHC), it said the hurricane, which recorded wind speeds of up to 281 km/h, “is expected to make landfall on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.”

“Milton is expected to grow in size and remain an extremely dangerous hurricane with expected moderate to major river flooding, life-threatening storm surge, heavy rainfall, and hurricane-force winds,” Wisma Putra said in a statement today.

Thus, it is advising Malaysians residing in or visiting Florida to remain vigilant and follow all evacuation and safety instructions issued by local authorities.

“Given the severity of Hurricane Milton, it is crucial to stay informed through reliable sources and prepare accordingly,” Wisma Putra said.

It added that Malaysians are strongly encouraged to register their presence via E-Konsular to receive timely updates and support.

For consular assistance in Florida, Malaysians may contact the Malaysian Embassy in Washington DC at 3516 International Court N.W., Washington DC, 20008, or via phone number +1 (202) 375 4396 and email address; mwwashington@kln.gov.my / consularwdc@kln.gov.my.

Wisma Putra said it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of all Malaysians in the affected regions.

Up to 15 inches of rain is possible for some isolated areas, international news reports quoted the NHC.
