SHAH ALAM, Sept 25 — The Menteri Besar of Kedah has apologised to the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj for his statement, which was deemed offensive and disrespectful to His Royal Highness.
Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor also apologised to Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, as well as to the people of Selangor regarding his statement, which was seen as belittling the appointment of the Selangor Menteri Besar.
"With the utmost respect and humility, I offer my profound apology to Sultan Sharafuddin for my statement on July 11, 2023, as charged against me in court, which has been regarded as insulting and disrespectful to His Royal Highness.
"I realise that when I am in another state, especially concerning my case when I was in Selangor, I should not have uttered words that were uncivil, offensive, and impolite as I did, even though the speech was made in the heat of the election campaign.
"Therefore, with deep remorse and humility, I sincerely beg for forgiveness from His Royal Highness, as well as from the Menteri Besar and the people of Selangor, for all my inappropriate remarks," he said during a press conference at Wisma Darul Aman in Alor Setar today.
Sanusi also pledged to be more cautious when making statements in the future and to ensure that all his remarks align with the polite and respectful customs of Malay culture, which upholds the Malay Rulers and the royal institution.
On July 18 last year, the Jeneri state assemblyman was charged at the High Court in Shah Alam for his remarks made during the Selangor State Election campaign at Taman Selayang Mutiara in Gombak on July 11.
He was charged under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948, and can be punished under Section 4(1) of the same Act, which carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison or a fine of RM5,000 or both if found guilty.
