Jais launches new tahfiz syllabus to help students face Islamophobia

By Suhaila Shahrul Annuar

SHAH ALAM, Sept 16 — The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) has introduced a new tahfiz syllabus to ensure students are equipped with balanced knowledge in Quran knowledge and other studies.

Jais director Dato’ Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said the tahfiz curriculum moderation has introduced new syllabi to equip huffaz (Quran memorisers) with wider knowledge, including how to face Islamophobia.

“We are introducing the tahfiz curriculum moderation and a few other steps to uplift the new syllabus so students not only memorise the Quran, but know what is happening around them and have intelligence (on other matters).

“His Royal Highness (Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj) said students must not just learn the Quran without understanding the meaning or lessons from it, because if so, how would they face Islamophobia?” he said.

Shahzihan said this after Selangor’s Maulidur Rasul celebration at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque, which was attended by Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah.

He said the curriculum moderation was done in phases before it was implemented.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said huffaz should be equipped with true Islamic teachings to face Islamophobia and groups who spread hate in the country using Islam.

He said this is as Islam in the country is at a crossroads due to those groups corrupting its sanctity.
