Malaysia accepts offer to host SEA Games 2027

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 — Malaysia has accepted an offer from the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) to host the SEA Games in 2027, the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) said.

It said the decision was made during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today, taking into account the commitment pledged by Sarawak, Sabah and Penang to co-host the games.

“Sarawak, Sabah and Penang have expressed their willingness to use their own allocations to co-host the Games with Kuala Lumpur,” the ministry said in a statement.

On Saturday, the prime minister announced Sarawak will be a 2027 SEA Games co-host after it demonstrated its capability with its outstanding management of the 2024 Malaysian Games, also known as Sukma.

The announcement was lauded by the National Sports Council, which said it is a positive sign for the country's sports industry, especially to improve national athletes’ performances.

Meanwhile, KBS congratulated the Sarawak government and the Sukma organising committee for successfully managing the event, which ended August 24.
