Pulau Carey to become port city

SHAH ALAM, Aug 21 — The Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) plans to transform Pulau Carey into a port city, said its group chief executive officer Datuk Mahmud Abbas.

Mahmud was quoted by The Edge as saying the state government granted PKNS, which is leading the project on behalf of the state, the rights to submerged land.

This land, according to him, will be designated for the development of a third port in the Klang River estuary.

“The port land — the land beneath the water — will belong to PKNS.

“At the moment, there is no title, but because the state said it is going to be owned by PKNS, we are doing the survey now,” he said in an interview.

The port with an estimated cost of RM28 billion is expected to handle up to 30 million 20-foot equivalent units of containers once it is completed in 2060.

The megaproject will be carried out in four phases, with the first phase to be completed in 2030.

Mahmud was quoted as saying any company awarded the concession to develop and operate the port must form a joint venture with PKNS, seeing as it is the state’s appointed partner for the project.

Besides the port development, he said PKNS will also look at developing a port city in Pulau Carey, the first of its kind in the country.

“We are talking about growing the economy, and (we have) an opportunity to develop a port city (there).

“Elsewhere in Port Klang, whether West Port or North Port, there are no port cities. Pulau Indah did not turn out to be a port city,” he said, according to the report.
