Indonesian applications to Malaysian universities surge by 39 pct

JAKARTA, Aug 21 — Applications from Indonesian students to further their studies in Malaysia have surged by 39 per cent as of July this year, with Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) receiving 3,145 applications compared to 2,269 during the same period last year (2023).

Its chief executive officer Novie Tajuddin said the increased interest from Indonesian students highlights the special relationship between the two countries in the field of education, which has the potential to be further strengthened.

To this, EMGS has organised an exhibition, ‘Ayo Kuliah di Malaysia’ (Let's Study in Malaysia), in Indonesia to provide students with accurate information from Malaysian higher education institutions about the programmes on offer.

The exhibition was held in four regions, touring several major cities including Java, Kalimantan, Pontianak, and Sumatra, with participation from over 50 public and private Malaysian higher education institutions.

“Over 10,000 visitors attended to seek consultation services from participating university officials, with the event in Pontianak recording the highest attendance, followed by Java, Sumatra, and Kalimantan,” he told Bernama today.

EMGS is an agency under the Higher Education Ministry, responsible for facilitating the processing of international student visas and promoting Malaysia as a global talent and knowledge hub.

Novie added that EMGS is also collaborating with influencers, including alumni from Indonesian students, to disseminate information on social media, while the initiative of eight Malaysian universities to establish the UKM Offshore Centre in Jakarta earlier this month has further strengthened the branding of Malaysian higher education.
