Malaysians in areas affected by southern California earthquake urged to remain vigilant

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 7 — Malaysians in areas affected by the earthquake in southern California, the United States, are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines issued by local authorities, said the Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra).

Through the Consulate General of Malaysia in Los Angeles, it is actively monitoring the situation following a 5.2-magnitude earthquake that occurred near Bakersfield.

The earthquake's epicentre was approximately 24 kilometres southwest of Lamont and about 40 kilometres south of Bakersfield. It struck at around 9.09pm local time.

“The Foreign Ministry will continue to closely monitor the developments and provide updates as necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of all Malaysians in the affected regions,” Wisma Putra said in a statement today.

Malaysians requiring consular assistance can contact the Consulate General of Malaysia in Los Angeles at 777 South Figueroa Street, Suite 600, Los Angeles, California or telephone +1-213-892 1238, or email mwlosangeles@kln.gov.my.

“As we continue to handle the ongoing Atlantic hurricane season, including monitoring Tropical Storm Debby in Florida, we are extending our vigilance to the earthquake effects in California,” it said.
