RM18.9 bln gross gross output value for water supply, other remediation activities in 2022

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 5 — Water supply, as well as sewerage, waste management, and remediation activities, registered a RM18.9 billion gross output value in 2022, which increased by 6.3 per cent annually from 2015.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said the water collection, treatment, and supply activities recorded the highest value of gross output amounted to RM9.8 billion with a share of 51.7 per cent, followed by waste collection (RM5.0 billion) and waste treatment and disposal (RM1.8 billion).

The information comes from the Economic Census 2023: Water Supply; Sewerage, Waste Management and Remediation Activities Subsector.

It said the water supply; sewerage, waste management, and remediation activities recorded RM9.0 billion in intermediate input value in 2022, growing annually by 4.9 per cent compared to RM6.4 billion in 2015.

“Water supply; sewerage, waste management, and remediation activities services recorded an increase in the number of establishments from 790 establishments in 2015 to 1,008 establishments in 2022, with an annual growth rate of 3.5 per cent.

“Waste collection activities registered the highest number of establishments, totalling 695 establishments or 68.9 per cent followed by material recovery activities with 128 establishments and sewerage activities with 77 establishments,” DOSM said in a statement today.

The water supply; sewerage, waste management, and remediation activities services employed 59,535 persons in 2022 from 49,162 persons in 2015, reflecting an annual growth rate of 2.8 per cent.

The water collection, treatment, and supply activities had the largest number of persons engaged with 23,327 persons, making up 39.2 per cent of the total, followed by waste collection activities with 21,944 persons and sewerage activities with 5,582 persons.

“These three activities accounted for more than half (share: 85.5 per cent) of the total persons engaged in water supply; sewerage, waste management, and remediation activities services,” it said.
