Selangor’s DRT service extended until year-end by popular demand

SHAH ALAM, July 31 – The pilot project for Selangor’s demand-responsive transit (DRT) ends today, but the state government has decided to extend the service until the end of the year due to high demand.

State executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han said the Selangor administration encourages DRT operators that participated in the proof of concept (POC) to continue offering the service in the existing zones until December.

He also urged for the existing subsidised rate of RM2 for a one-way trip to be maintained.

"The state government is refining suitable and effective approaches so that the people of Selangor can continue to enjoy the convenience of DRT services," he said in a statement today.

While Ng did not mention any names, the two service providers that took part in the DRT pilot project in Selangor are Asia Mobility Technologies Sdn Bhd, which operates Trek Rides, and Badanbas Coach Sdn Bhd, which operates Mobi.

This is after they received approval by the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad).

The POC phase began on November 22 last year and ends today. During this period, the two firms operated in eight zones across the state as the state looked to gather data on DRT usage.

Ng said following this, the State Committee on Mobility which he chairs will conduct a comprehensive study on the DRT pilot project before presenting its findings to the State Executive Council to propose for a full implementation of the service.

"Throughout the eight months of implementing the Selangor DRT pilot project, the state government has received positive feedback on the demand and necessity of this service.

"Additionally, the state government received multiple proposals to expand the DRT service to further empower Selangor’s public transport agenda.”

The eight locations served as part of the pilot project were Puchong, Ampang, Bandar Utama, Subang Jaya, Shah Alam, Klang, Serdang and Hulu Kelang.

DRT was introduced as part of the RM25 million Selangor Mobility initiative to enhance the state’s public transportation system and to address the challenge of first-mile and last-mile connectivity.

Passengers can book rides via a mobile app, while drivers are guided by a separate app within a defined geofenced zone.
