SHAH ALAM, July 23 — The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) has recorded significant improvement in the water quality of several rivers affected by odour pollution earlier today, which led to the temporary suspension of four water treatment plants (WTP).
In a Facebook post, it said that as of 5.45pm, Sungai Selangor and Sungai Sembah had been cleared of pollution, with odour readings of zero threshold odour number (TON)
Checks at the intake points of the Rantau Panjang WTP and Sungai Selangor Phase 3 WTP also recorded zero TON readings.
Meanwhile, odour readings at Sungai Kundang and the intake points of Sungai Selangor Phase 1 and 2 WTPs have decreased from around 4 TON to 1 TON.
“Mitigation efforts by Luas’ teams are ongoing, including the addition of six more bags of activated carbon, bringing the total to 65 bags (1.62 tons) to ensure odour neutralisation at the affected locations.
“Raw water pumping from the KL Larut and HORAS 600 alternative ponds continues at a combined rate of 732 litres of water per day to aid dilution in the river and expedite the flow of contaminated water downstream past the intake points.
“Simultaneously, Luas’ teams are closely monitoring the cleanup efforts by the involved factory in the affected areas until they are fully completed. Luas remains diligently focused on implementing mitigation measures and closely monitors the current situation.
Meanwhile, state water operator Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd said that as of 3pm today, the Rantau Panjang WTP has resumed operations.
Earlier today, it was reported that an unscheduled water supply disruption hit seven regions in the Klang Valley.
This is after the operations of the Rantau Panjang WTP and Sungai Selangor Phases 1, 2, and 3 WTPs were suspended due to odour pollution in Sungai Kundang and Sungai Sembah.
The areas affected are Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Gombak, Kuala Lumpur, Hulu Selangor, and Kuala Selangor.
