Meta apologises to RTM, Johor Sports Council over erroneous Facebook translation

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — Meta today apologised to Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), the Johor Sports Council and others impacted by RTM’s Facebook translation about the installation of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, at Istana Negara on Saturday, which went viral.

Meta’s Southeast Asia public policy director Rafael Frankel in a statement said Meta is aware of an error in the automated translation from Malay to English, affecting Facebook posts related to His Majesty’s installation ceremony and the birthday of Johor’s Che Puan Mahkota Khaleeda.

“We have since resolved this technical error. We deeply respect the Malaysian royal family and sincerely apologise to RTM, the Johor State (Sports) Council and others impacted by this event,” he said.

Yesterday, RTM clarified it did not upload official information in English about the installation ceremony.

RTM’s public relations division in a statement said what appeared on the broadcaster’s Facebook page was an automatic translation by Facebook’s system.

RTM lodged a police report while the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission contacted Meta over the erroneous translation.
