BANGKOK, July 17 — Initial forensic investigation has revealed that six people who were found dead in a hotel room in Ratchaprasong yesterday involved cyanide, according to the Thai police.
Metropolitan Police Bureau deputy commissioner Police Major-General Nopasilp Poonsawat said cups in the room contained cyanide traces.
“Based on preliminary test results, qualitative analysis has identified the presence of cyanide in the liquid in the teapot and six cups.
“We suspect that one of the six victims is responsible for the deaths,” he said during a press conference today.
The police are collaborating with Vietnamese and United States (US) officials, and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation.
The investigation confirms this was a personal matter between the victims and not related to any gang or criminal organisation.
“The inspection of all eight travel bags belonging to the victims revealed no illegal items. However, we did find legal documents related to a land lawsuit from 2022.
"These documents will be translated by an interpreter,” Nopasilp said.
The police have instructed Immigration to coordinate with the Vietnamese Embassy to investigate the backgrounds of the victims.
It was reported that two Vietnamese Americans and four Vietnam nationals were found dead in a hotel room at 4.30pm yesterday.
Investigation showed that the victims had died less than 24 hours from suspected poisoning as there were no signs of violence or robbery.
