KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 — The Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) is committed to successfully hosting the Asean University Games (AUG) following Malaysia’s selection as the host in 2026.
It is also confident that organising the games will continue to produce top sports talents and elevate the nation's profile globally.
"MOHE is also committed to working with other agencies and sports bodies to develop high-performing sports talents who can compete competitively on the international stage," MOHE said in a statement today.
Meanwhile, the ministry extended congratulations to the national contingent, comprising athletes from higher education institutions, at AUG 2024 for their outstanding achievement. They exceeded the target of 35 gold medals and secured third place at the event, which took place from June 25 to yesterday.
"The national contingent won 38 gold, 45 silver, and 60 bronze medals over 11 days of competition in Surabaya and Malang, Indonesia.
"This remarkable achievement is undoubtedly the result of our national contingent’s hard work. They comprised 263 athletes and 119 officials and competed in 18 events against 11 other Asean countries," it said.
Previously, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir announced increased incentives for AUG 2024 winners: RM3,000 for gold medalists, RM2,000 for silver medalists, and RM1,500 for bronze medalists.
