‘Federal-state collaboration crucial to improve major highway infrastructure’

SHAH ALAM, July 4 — A state government backbencher is urging the Selangor administration to collaborate with Putrajaya to enhance traffic infrastructure.

Port Klang assemblyman Azmizam Zaman Huri emphasised the need for improvements to the Federal Highway, a crucial route that connects Klang to Kuala Lumpur, and major roads that link to Selangor’s main entry points into Malaysia.

These points include the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang, Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, and Port Klang.

“Selangor must urge the federal government to allocate funds each year for maintenance and repairing works of highways at these three main entry points.

“The state and federal governments must also collaborate to enhance and repair the Federal Highway, which connects Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

“The current condition of the Federal Highway doesn’t reflect (Selangor) as a developed state,” he said during the First Selangor Plan mid-term review debate in the Selangor State Legislative Assembly today.

Azmizam pointed out critical issues that need addressing to improve the Federal Highway, including non-functional street lights, that pose significant risks to road users, particularly at night.

While acknowledging that the issues are complex and may take time to resolve, Azmizam said they must be taken seriously.

He proposed that the state and federal governments conduct a traffic impact assessment in Selangor to address congestion.

“The data is crucial for effective planning and utilisation, as it reveals vehicle trends and identifies areas most affected by congestion in Selangor,” he said.
