SHAH ALAM, July 4 — The Selangor administration has revised its target to reduce absolute poverty by 2025 to 0.5 per cent from 0.7 per cent previously.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said this proves his government’s commitment to intensify targeted efforts to reduce poverty in Selangor.

He made this announcement when tabling the First Selangor Plan (RS-1) mid-term review at the State Legislative Assembly today.

According to Amirudin, the state’s absolute poverty rate stood at 1.5 per cent in 2022.

“The Selangor administration is aware of the challenges of reaching this target and is working hard to improve the socio-economic status of all in Selangor,” he said.

On relative poverty, which is an important indicator in a modern economy, Amirudin said the state aims to reduce relative poverty to 11 per cent by 2025, from 14.2 per cent in 2022.

“To achieve this target, more targeted and concerted efforts will be implemented, especially … in rural and urban areas,’’ he said.

In the same speech, Amirudin reiterated the state government’s success in eradicating hardcore poverty in the state in 2022.

He said ongoing efforts to address relative and absolute poverty are being done in line with the Madani Economic Framework.

Amirudin highlighted the state’s success in improving socio-economic conditions, including raising the median household income to RM9,983, surpassing the RM9,290 target set for Malaysia’s central region in the 12th Malaysia Plan.

On the overall RS-1 strategic theme of ensuring social inclusivity and the people’s well-being, Amirudin said 12 projects, programmes and initiatives out of 98 under this theme have been successfully implemented.

The remaining 86 are being activated.
