SHAH ALAM, July 4 — The state economy is projected to grow by a healthy 5.2 per cent this year, Menteri Besar Dato’ Amirudin Shari told the State Legislative Assembly when tabling the First Selangor Plan (RS-1) mid-term review today.

If achieved, this will exceed the growth of the national economy, which is predicted to be between 4 and 5 per cent.
Amirudin said the figure, while slightly lower than the 5.4 per cent gross domestic product (GDP) growth recorded by the state last year, takes into consideration the expected slowdown in the global economy.
In his speech, the Menteri Besar again praised the state for its excellent economic performance last year, following the Statistics Department’s (DOSM) latest report, which showed Selangor was the top contributor to the national GDP.
“We contributed 25.9 per cent in 2023, compared with 25.5 per cent in 2022 and 24.8 per cent in 2021.
“In 2023, Selangor’s economic growth of 5.4 per cent was the highest among all states in the country,” he said today.

On Tuesday, DOSM released its GDP by State 2023 report, which revealed Selangor was one of only four states with growth exceeding the national rate of 3.6 per cent, the other three being Pahang (5.2 per cent), Johor (4.1 per cent) and Kuala Lumpur (3.7 per cent).
It showed Selangor’s economy was largely bolstered by strong performance in the services and manufacturing sectors.
Amirudin told the state assembly that Selangor’s economic activity of RM406.1 billion in 2023 meant the state was the first in the country to surpass the RM400 billion mark.
He credited the RS-1 with boosting the state’s economy.
“When I first tabled the plan, Selangor contributed 24.8 per cent to the national economic pie.
“Praise be to God, after the state began implementing RS-1 initiatives, we are starting to see Selangor’s performance improve,” he said.
