KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 — The National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) had received over 37,000 calls from scam victims with a total reported loss of RM203.33 million as of May.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said since its establishment on October 12, 2022, until May this year, the total number of calls received from the public was 95,094.

“The number of investigation papers opened by the Royal Malaysian Police stood at 10,649 for fraud cases, under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

“Seventy-four investigation papers for money laundering were opened, involving the freezing of 637 accounts valued at RM72.38 million,” he said in a written reply published on the Parliament website yesterday to a question from Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN-Kuala Krai), who asked how effective the NSRC has been in dealing with online fraud while also identifying scammers’ modus operandi.

Anwar added that the NSRC and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission have blocked phone numbers used by scammers.

As of May, 131 phone numbers have been terminated for involvement in fraudulent activities, and 112 suspicious phone numbers have been blocked.
