Swimming squad garners two gold medals for Malaysia at Asean University Games

SURABAYA, June 26 — The swimming squad contributed two gold medals to the national contingent on the first day of the 2024 Asean University Games (AUG) at the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) swimming pool today.

National female swimmer Phee Jinq En won the gold medal in the women's 50m breaststroke with a time of 32.03s. Swimmers from Thailand (32.33s) and Indonesia (32.95s) took the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Another gold medal was delivered by Tan Khai Xin, who won the men's 400m freestyle final after recording 4:05.18s to beat teammate Low Zheng Yong (4:06.21s), who grabbed the silver and the bronze went to Vietnam's Truong Viet Vu (4:06.34s ).

Earlier, national female judo athlete Nur Farah Izzati Wallah won the first gold medal for the national contingent in the women's under 52kg event after her challenger Maryam March Maharani was disqualified for breaking the rules in the final.

Meanwhile, national male judo athlete Muhammad Fareez Mohameid brought in a silver medal after losing to host athlete Tommy Darmawan in the final of the men's under 60kg event. The Malaysian earlier defeated Singaporean challenger Bryan Tze Haeng in the first round this morning.

The swimming squad also contributed three bronze medals through Bryan Leong Xin Ren in the men's 50m breaststroke in 29.43s and Hii Puong Wei in the men's 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:07s apart from the women's 4x100 freestyle relay squad (9:05.34s) comprising Chu Xin Ying, Jerriel Lau, Shi Qi and Georgene We Jee Ern.

The Malaysian contingent is currently second in the AUG 2024 medal tally with three gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals behind top-ranked hosts Indonesia.

For the second day of competition, the national judo and swimming squads could contribute more medals, while the futsal and climbing events start tomorrow.
