SHAH ALAM, June 25 — The state government is closely monitoring the La Nina phenomenon, which is expected to hit Malaysia starting next month.

State executive councillor for disaster management Mohd Najwan Halimi said they have

already received a brief from the relevant agencies regarding their preparations for the upcoming weather changes.

“We always monitor climate change from time to time. I have also received a brief from the Selangor Disaster Management Unit regarding their preparations.

“At the state level, we are closely monitoring. Any potential or implications, InsyaAllah, we will be able to handle it,” he said.

Najwan was speaking to the press after the handover ceremony of Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI donations to the Selangor Archery Association and Selangor Rugby Union for the 21st Malaysia Games in Sarawak, at MBI's headquarters yesterday.

Earlier, the Malaysian Meteorological Department said the La Nina phenomenon, which usually brings wetter weather conditions, is expected to start between July and September.

Its director-general Muhammad Helmi Abdullah said the phenomenon typically peaks towards the end of the year and is expected to continue into early next year.
