PUTRAJAYA, June 15 — Dengue cases declined to 2,508 from June 2 to 8, compared with 2,522 cases the previous week.

In a statement today, Health director-general Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan said there were no deaths from dengue complications from June 2 to 8, which represents the year’s 23rd Epidemiological Week (ME23).

He said the cumulative number of dengue cases until ME23 was 67,137, compared with 51,331 cases in the same period last year.

“There were 48 deaths from dengue complications, compared with 37 fatalities in the same period last year,” he said.

Dr Radzi said dengue hotspots in ME23 dropped to 71, from the 74 in ME22.

Selangor was home to 53 of the 71 hotspots, with seven in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, four in Kedah, three in Perak, two in Penang, and one each in Negeri Sembilan and Sarawak.

The health official said there were three chikungunya cases reported in ME23, bringing the year’s tally to 34.

He added that 1,149 blood samples, six urine samples and two spinal fluid samples were screened for zika, all with negative results.

“Every party must cooperate in ensuring there are no Aedes mosquito breeding grounds on their premises.

“The public is urged to hold community clean-ups to destroy Aedes breeding grounds,” he said.
