Govt ratification of ILO convention improves national labour practices

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — The government’s decision to ratify Convention C155 of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) is a historic step in protecting workers and will improve the country’s labour standards.

Union Network International-Malaysian Liaison Council president Datuk Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal said he believed the move also proved the government’s continued commitment to improving occupational health and safety.

“This ratification was realised less than a year after Steven Sim Chee Keong was appointed Human Resources Minister. Congratulations and well done to him.

“Certainly, this latest step will give an injection of effort and enthusiasm among all stakeholders,” he said in a statement today.

The Convention C155 ratification was handed over by Sim to ILO director-general Gilbert F. Houngbo at the 112th International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, yesterday.

The Human Resources Ministry in a statement yesterday said the move complements occupational safety and health policies in the country, as the Occupational Safety and Health Act (Amendment) 2022 came into force on June 1.

The ministry said it hopes the move will improve safety and health at workplaces nationwide.
