KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, who is currently on a working visit to Jordan, presented a symbolic check worth US$1 million (RM4.7 million) on behalf of Malaysians to two organisations in Jordan to help Gazans get cancer treatment.
Mohamad shared in a Facebook post that the two groups — Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation (JHCO) and King Hussein Cancer Centre (KHCC) — received US$500,000 each.
He said the contribution was a result of donations from Malaysians to the Humanitarian Trust Fund for the People of Palestine.
“Malaysia is committed to working with JHCO in efforts to provide humanitarian aid to Palestinians, now and in the future.”
The minister added that during a meeting with JHCO secretary-general Hussein Mohammad Al-Shebli, he was informed the group had been using the King Hussein Bridge, the only land route to Gaza, since the closure of the Rafah border crossing in Egypt on May 7.
JHCO played a crucial role in managing aid deliveries from various international organisations and donor countries, he said.
Mohamad said he also visited the KHCC cancer treatment centre and was warmly welcomed by its board of trustees chair Princess Ghida Talal. Also present were KHCC chief executive officer Nisreen Qatamesh and donation collection director Abeer Al-Maghrabi.
KHCC, established in 1997, provides free cancer treatment and pursues world-class research. The centre now treats 300 Palestinian cancer patients.
According to Mohamad, JHCO and KHCC greatly appreciated the contributions from Malaysians as a sign of solidarity with Palestinians.
“KHCC also hopes to establish cooperation with the National Cancer Society Malaysia to strengthen cancer treatment and research efforts in the future,” he noted.
Mohamad said in both meetings held in Jordan, he emphasised Malaysia’s commitment to providing humanitarian and health assistance to Palestinians, as well as strengthening cooperation with leading institutions in Jordan.
He also expressed hope this collaboration would continue to bring much-needed assistance to Palestinians in Gaza.
Mohamad is in Jordan to attend the High-Level Conference “Call for Action: Urgent Humanitarian Response for Gaza” today, co-hosted by Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and United Nations secretary-general António Guterres
Meanwhile, Wisma Putra in a Facebook post today said Malaysia’s collaboration with JHCO, which includes the procurement of essential supplies, leverages Jordan’s proximity to Gaza and its robust infrastructure,
“These supplies are crucial for the survival and well-being of Gazans,” it said.
According to Wisma Putra, the US$500,000 for KHCC was to assist in covering the treatment costs for Palestinians.
