SHAH ALAM, June 7 — The redevelopment of Kuala Selangor Old Town earned its local council a recognition at the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA).
In a Facebook post, the Kuala Selangor Municipal Council (MPKS) said it bagged the Honour Award under the Green Initiatives category.
The award was received by MPKS Landscape Department director Norazean Abdul Rahman in a ceremony at Majestic Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, on May 11.
“The rejuvenation process of Kuala Selangor Old Town began with a special task force that identified areas for improvement, in line with sustainable development goals,” it said.
MLAA is an annual event organised by the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia. It was first held in 2007.
MPKS began the rejuvenation of Kuala Selangor Old Town in 2019, starting with Dataran Melawati, which is now a new landmark of the district.
Formerly known as Padang Kemerdekaan, public facilities and urban infrastructure at Dataran Melawati were upgraded, and it now also serves as a tourist attraction.
MPKS also revamped the back lane of Jalan Raja Jalil, which now features 15 heritage-themed murals on the walls of old buildings and colourful brick paths.
Among the notable artworks are Bunga Artistik by Izwan Rahimi, Fendi Rosli and Andi Syafie; and Lombong Bijih Timah by CO2 Mural.
