KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 — The High Commission of Malaysia in Namibia today launched its Poultry Barn Project in collaboration with the Namibian Correctional Service and the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) Alumni of Namibia.
Acting High Commissioner of Malaysia in Windhoek Datuk Mohamad Rameez Yahaya said the collaboration saw the Malaysian government’s contribution via the MTCP fund, largely for the project’s building in Namibia and the rearing of 200 chicks.
“This will assist Namibian inmates in the Namibian Hardap Correctional Facility in Mariental to be self-sustained and equipped with the necessary capacity-building development to improve their livelihood post-incarceration.
“The collaboration indicates the continuous efforts by the Malaysian government via its MTCP Alumni in Namibia to assist in the socio-economic development of Namibians; in this case, with the inmate segment,” he said.
Rameez said it is hoped the programme will guide inmates on how to engage in meaningful activities and acquire valuable skills that will aid in their rehabilitation and reintegration into Namibian society.
Rameez added that this initiative would empower them with critical knowledge in poultry farming, which could be turned into a livelihood post-incarceration.
He said such a project is in line with Madani principles to assist societies with socio-economic development.
MTCP Alumni in Namibia president Shali Kapepo thanked the Malaysian government for its generosity and dedication to build an impactful project in Namibia.
He said such a project would leave a great impact and imprint on Namibians with regard to Malaysia’s effort to enhance its relations with Namibia in various aspects, especially in capacity building.
Deputy commissioner-general Sam Shaalulange of the Namibian Correctional Service said the initiative by the High Commission of Malaysia in Windhoek and MTCP Alumni has opened avenues for his service to set up more poultry barns that can benefit Namibians in need.
