SHAH ALAM, June 1 — The improved 2023 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results in the state is partially attributable to the Selangor People’s Tutoring Programme (PTRS), according to Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), or MBI.
In a statement, the corporate body noted that the state recorded an average grade (GPN) of 4.67 in last year’s SPM, compared to 4.80 in the preceding year — a smaller GPN value indicates better achievement.
The number of Selangor candidates qualified to receive SPM certificates also increased to 58,082 (91.14 per cent) from 56,402 (89.25 per cent) in 2022.
MBI then pointed out that four of the six subjects under the state’s free tuition programme — English language, History, Science and Mathematics — saw improved pass percentage.
The other two subjects offered under PTRS are Malay Language and Add Maths.
“The pass percentage for History was the highest among the four subjects, with an increase of 2.03 percent,” it said today.
“In total, 58,487 candidates (91.99 percent) passed the subject compared to 56,739 candidates (89.96 percent) in 2022.”
“Overall, the Subject Average Grade (GPMP) for all six PTRS subjects showed improvement in 2023 compared to the preceding year.”
On May 27, Education director-general Azman Adnan announced that 11,713 candidates who sat for the 2023 SPM examination obtained excellent results with grades A+, A and A- in all subjects.
He said overall, 2023 SPM candidates also performed better with a national GPN of 4.60 compared to 4.74 in the previous year.
PTRS is managed and coordinated by MBI’s Social Responsibility and Communications Department and is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility programmes.
Starting this year, the free tuition programme has been expanded to include Form 4 students. It also now offers intervention programmes for primary school students with illiteracy.
A total of RM10 million has been allocated to ensure the programme's success this year.
