OIC urges probe into crimes committed by Israel against Palestinian prisoners

KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 — The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has called for an investigation into all crimes committed by the Israeli occupation against Palestinian prisoners.

The OIC said it is concerned over the intensified arbitrary detention campaigns carried out by the regime in the occupied Palestinian territory, which led to an increase in the number of prisoners to more than 9,500, including 80 female prisoners and more than two hundred children.

Over 3,600 are administrative detainees without charge or trial, and about 600 prisoners are serving life sentences, it said in a statement to mark the Palestinian Prisoner's Day on Wednesday.

It also renewed its condemnation of the practices of the Israeli occupation, adding that 16 Palestinian prisoners had died in Israeli prisons since October 7 last year, in addition to the death of 27 other prisoners from Gaza Strip due to torture and medical neglect.

In reiterating its solidarity and support for the rights of Palestinian prisoners, the OIC called on the international community and competent human rights institutions to compel the Israeli regime to deal with Palestinian prisoners in accordance with the Geneva Conventions, international humanitarian law and all provisions of relevant international conventions.

It stressed that the punishment and abuse endured by Palestinian prisoners in Israel’s prisons is a flagrant violation of all international humanitarian law, including the Charter of Human Rights, the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, and other relevant international instruments.

Palestinian Prisoner's Day, marked annually on April 17, is dedicated to the freedom of Palestinian prisoners and support for their rights.
